Active Citizens Fund
The Active Citizens Fund is a support program for the EEA Grants. The EEA Grants are a financial aid mechanism created by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway to enhance the protection of human rights in 15 EU member states. Homo Digitalis received funding of €4,500 in 2020 to implement the Digital RiSe (Digital Rights and Security) project.
Digital Freedom Fund
In 2023, the Digital Freedom Fund (DFF) provided €17,000 to conduct three studies on the legislation concerning the retention of electronic communications metadata in Greece and to explore strategic legal interventions.
Electronic Privacy Information Center
The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) granted €4,300 in February 2019 and €4,500 in December 2020 through the Public Voice Fund. This program aims to support civil society organizations worldwide that work to protect human rights online. The funding was used to strengthen Homo Digitalis and its efforts to protect digital rights in Greece.
European AI & Society Fund
The European AI & Society Fund was Homo Digitalis’ first major donor, providing €108,000 in 2022. This funding enabled the organization to enhance its presence, hire its first Human Rights & AI Director, and engage collaborators for accounting and administrative support. The funding was renewed in 2024 with €72,000 through 2026. Additionally, in 2024, the EAISF selected Homo Digitalis’ proposal for the “G.AI.N: Greek AI Network” project under its AI Act Implementation Grant, allocating €48,000 for 2025-2026.
European Commission (Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή)
The European Commission co-finances the Next Generation Internet (NGI) TALER pilot program, which develops an electronic payment tool based on privacy principles and open-source software. Homo Digitalis serves as the Work Package Leader for Working Package 6, receiving a total of €230,000 for 2023-2026.
European Digital Rights (EDRi)
Since 2020, European Digital Rights (EDRi) has supported Homo Digitalis through various funded programs to organize joint actions and research on topics such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, data protection, and law enforcement. Total funding amounts to over €35,000.
Papaki
Papaki has supported Homo Digitalis since 2019 by providing the organization’s domain name and related services.
Top.Host
Top.Host supported Homo Digitalis from 2019 to 2023 by offering free website hosting services on secure and high-quality servers.
Wikimedia Deutschland
Wikimedia Deutschland granted €10,000 during 2020-21 to advocate for the incorporation of the EU Copyright Directive into Greek law in a way that respects human rights, particularly freedom of expression and information online.
